Motherhood is often romanticized as the best thing to happen in a woman’s life. And though that holds true for most women, it also comes with its own share of challenges, both physically and emotionally. Despite everything, mothers always find it hard to open up about the baby blues and postpartum depression they experience at a time when one expects them to be on cloud nine. However, with celebs such as Deepika Padukone and Mandira Bedi opening up and addressing mental health issues, more celebrities are feeling confident to discuss about things that were once considered taboo. And the latest celebrity to join the bandwagon is the celebrity mom, Esha Deol when opened up about postpartum depression in a YouTube chat show.
Esha Deol who is a mother to two beautiful girls have recently opened up about postpartum depression and motherhood in her close friend’s YouTube show, Mama Says. Talking about how being a mother has changed her life, the actress remarked that it has been completely transformational from being a brat, a daughter, a woman who worked and finally being in love and getting married to the love of her life to now being a mother. Esha said she loves her mother much more now that she knows what her mother must be going through as she is more aware of the bond between a mother and a child. The actress described motherhood as the best phase of her life and recommend every woman to have a baby.
Talking about postpartum depression, Esha said that she experienced no postpartum depression when she gave birth to her firstborn, Radhya. The actress felt something different after having her second baby but couldn’t figure out what it was as it was like nothing she had experienced before. Esha also revealed how she once cried in a room full of people soon after delivery and felt quite low and dull. It was the happiest moment of her life as she had given birth to a baby girl for the second time but she didn’t know what was going on with her.
Talking about how her mother Hema Malini helped her, Esha further stated how her mom had figured out something was off which helped her to seek treatment at the right time. The 38-year-old said how she was fortunate enough to have a mother who noticed the changes in her mood which in turn helped her to get treatment at a stage when women are the most vulnerable after giving birth. Hema Malini had asked her to get her blood tested as she suspected it could be the hormonal fluctuations that are causing it. Listening to her mom, Esha got her blood test done and found out that her progesterone was not at the right level. She then got treated for it by taking vitamins and stuff and bounced back to her old self within a month.
When asked about her pregnancy cravings, the actress shared that she ate a lot of rasam rice and curd when she was pregnant with her first child, Radhya. With Mariya, she had varan bhaat and thecha. Talking about food aversions, Esha revealed that she couldn’t stand Chinese food so much so that her staff wasn’t allowed to cook Chinese in her kitchen.
Giving us further insight into motherhood, the 38-year-old actress further revealed that motherhood has made her much more patient and nicer to people, and more confident. Revealing the first time she held her newborn, she said that she felt protective towards her and felt like ‘this is mine.’
With more celebrities coming forward about their experience with postpartum depression or mental health in general, we hope it inspires more people to have the courage to talk about it, and more importantly seek treatment.
